Subject: Too many apps.. help me understand..
Me(As Someone in Tech) - Don’t give kids smart phones with lots of social media access before HS.
Parents(Friends & Consumer Feedback) - I can’t believe all the stuff the kids are seeing on social media. ALSO, We need more screen limit options. ALSO, My DC is so addicted to their phone. ALSO Why does school not require they leave them in their locker if they are a distraction in class. ALSO, why are schools not allowing them, I paid good money. ALSO I can’t keep up with all these apps. ALSO My kid is so depressed as they can see all the images from the party they weren’t invited to while its going on. ALSO I can’t believe the things they are sharing. ALSO, Etc, Etc. Etc, Etc.
Me & My Colleagues - Right, because it’s not like we told anyone that this shouldn’t be given to kids. And who could have thunk that ES and MS kids hadn’t developed good regulation and decision making skills. And its not like Pediatricians and Psychologist have weighed in. But we’ll continue to stay the course on making this safe for kids.
Also Colleague - I wonder if I can rebrand Fifty Shades of Grey as a YA book. I mean its just literature right? Clearly reading is safe for kids.
I know the above sounds snarky and trite but seriously, very little social media has been designed with kids in mind, which means it’s inherently not meant for them. That’s not to say it’s bad, its just not designed with any thought to protecting kids “innocence” or potential safety issues for them. Its marketing and communication and connection designed with adults and business in mind. Its the same as daytime PBS vs the Nightly News. Both are designed to educated, entertain, and inform, but you wouldn’t necessarily allow a toddler to watch both. Want another example, going to school and learning to socialize and date, vs. giving a MS’er access to Tinder.
Once you decide to give your kids social media, you’re accepting the above facts and all that comes with it. The only thing you can do after that is educate your kids on safety best practices and attempt to monitor.

I agree with this (and I’m the PP whose daughter was reading smut on Wattpad).
