If enough people just send regrets, they'll get the message. But if they haven't already internalized the idea that a huge party is a bad idea, nothing you say is going to make the light bulb go off.
Yes. Everybody knows this is not a good idea by this point. If they are doing it, there is an obstreperous and defiant element to it.
You have to drop the rope. Lecturing them just riles them up more and gives them that juicy sense of being oppressed. Just give a polite and pared-down no, and let it go. Take the wind out of those sails.
