My kid has always been very social but at that young age even she would not play with other kids that much. She preferred to observe adults and how they interacted but not kids for some reason.

Thanks again, everyone. She went to a lovely in-home from age 4 months to 13 months, and they did not mention anything like this. That daycare permanently closed due to Covid and we started her in the new one at 15 months. I’m relieved that this is not unusual behavior.

My kid is seven years old and still doesn’t join in things at school. It might just be personality. My kid isn’t going to win any charm awards but he has friends, interests, etc., and is NT.

They say that she plays happily near the other kids but got upset a few times when they tried to get her to share her toys. And a couple of times DD did not participate well in a group activity so they had to do something separate with her. But for the most part she’s in the same room with the other kids but just prefers doing her own thing.


You need to find a new daycare. They don’t understand normal child development and that is very concerning. Every thing you described is 100% normal.

Yep the problem is they’re expecting her to behave like the older kids which is problematic.

Isn’t this pretty normal? As long as they are comfortable around other kids (meaning comfortable being in the same play area and not freaking out) that’s pretty normal for them to do their own independent or parallel play at that age. We were in a very small group daycare with an experienced teacher (15 plus years with toddlers there) and she said that was normal at that age for many kids.
