Yeah, I saw people arguing about this on Twitter. Looks like some class-based gyms are asking for clarification. I don't see why OrangeTheory would have to close while Golds stays open, as long as there are never more than the allowed number of people either place and social distancing is followed. Looks like limit is 25 people -- if OT can afford to run smaller classes, it seems like there should be an allowance.

Yeah, that sucks. OTF actually does a really good job of keeping everyone apart for the entire class period, no shared equipment, etc. Not sure why gyms can stay open but OTF has to close.

In other cities with similar restrictions, OTF switched to an “open gym” model. You get a paper with the workout of the day on it, or scan a QR code at your station to get the workout info. Or you can do your own thing. The instructor either teaches through a screen or is only in class to tell people to switch stations, not correct form or give directions. It seems utterly silly. What difference, at this point, does it make??

I think at this point, part of the point is to literally make it hard for people to do things like go to the gym or eat indoors, so that people just kind of self-select out of these activities without the government having to formally shut businesses down, when they can't/won't give them money to deal with it.

The goal is to get people to stay home. Putting lots of restrictions on gym usage is a way to do that.

There's no way OTF can be safe, sorry. It's not about 6 feet of distance.

According to you, oh wise and anonymous internet poster/expert in OTF extraordinaire?

Can you post a link? My teenage son was still working with a personal trainer 1x week, but the trainer has gone into quarantine (for the second time.) That's the end of the trainer and the gym as far as I'm concerned....

I belong to a boutique class-based gym and they do a really nice job of keeping people apart and using separate equipment. They're down to like 4 people at a time. Ugh.

I get the frustration, though I honestly think they should make the max capacity limits pretty low right now (like lower than 25) in which case it would probably make it hard to run classes anyway unless you’re talking about essentially just semi-private lessons (which seems like they’d probably be ok? Unless I’m wrong?).

I just think we need something akin to a lockdown for the next month. I’m really scared about post-thanksgiving numbers for Covid.

PP here, that's more or less what it is. And it's often couples, who are grouped together, so two households are mixed instead of more.

DC closed gyms today. Weirdly, I've seen no one talking about it (though people have been talking about the new rules for restaurants (down to 25% capacity indoors) and gatherings (no more than 10 people indoors). But it's on p. 14 of today's situational update:

https://mayor.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/coronavirus/release_content/attachments/Situational-Update-Presentation_11-23-2020-v2.pdf

No indoor classes at all. Outdoor classes limited to 25 people or less (including staff, I'm assuming).

Seems like kind of a big deal after everyone complaining about it for so long! I think it's good, especially because better to do it now and hopefully avoid a worst case scenario post-Thanksgiving than to wait and then have to shut everything down, including outdoor classes.

Wait, this guy works out in an indoor gym? Someone needs to get photos and post online. School isn’t safe for kids but he can just live his bachelor life? Aw hell no

His what now? This obsession with his personal life is creepy.

Sure. Gyms have zero responsibility in the skyrocketing infection rates nationwide.
