Why on earth would you allow another adult to task you with this crap? How do you say to someone (to whom you're married!): here is my stuff, list it and sell it on Craig's list including dealing with buyers/creepy weirdos, thnx!

I need the blow-by-blow of how an exchange like this would even occur.

DH and I had a somewhat similar pattern, although in our case I wanted to donate (freecycle) or occasionally sell; DH wanted to take it to the dump (not even the salvation army). The deal we made was that if I could not get rid of it 'my' way by X date, he was free to take it to the dump. He could never believe that people wanted a set of candlesticks or whatever, but they did. I did all the work however (including donating more than 800 books and getting a nice tax deduction). I also really liked our neighborhood freecycle--it was pick up on porches (even pre covid) and even if I asked for 5$ people would leave under the mat or in the mailbox. That was small town living....

However in THIS case, there is no reason why YOU should do any of this work. Either HE does it all and agrees to a certain date, or you take it to the dump/goodwill.

if you do sell on craiglist just note that if they are sending you a check for the item in advance, it's a scam

I've done that, and the part you're leaving out is that it's WAY more work than the average busy household it willing to do.

I would try to convince him to give it away to someone in the neighborhood. There is a Buy Nothing FB group - hyper local - that has a happy recipient for every last (worthless to the owner) thing!

I joined a buy nothing group on Facebook. I got a few items for my toddler over the summer. I felt like a taker and never gave anything because I would normally just donate/throw it out.

It was more hassle to coordinate pick up.

I have a lot more things to get rid of. Will probably just donate again.

Annoying but I would consider this meeting halfway. You have purged and it’s one way of making him feel like his stuff has value. It can’t hurt to humor him as long as he deals with the buyers.

Ugh. My DH does this too, though waaaaay overvalues everything so it ends up not selling. He once listed a used bike for the same we paid new! He handles it all himself though-I have no involvement.

this is your one and only role:

you tell DH that on X day, the good will (or Salvation army) truck has been scheduled to pick up things. If HE has not sold his crap, then it's being taken away. on the day of pick up, you move the junk from the garage to the driveway/curb for the pick up.

end of story.

this is what I have done with my DW who simply cleans out things but never actually gets rid of the stuff.

I'm with the previous posters. His project, he has to do the write ups and photographs. He's offloading his work on you. Such bull.

I use our local Buy Nothing Group on Facebook. At first my husband was like yours, trying to convince me to sell things. Finally when I borrowed a neighbor’s food dehydrator (whom I’ve never met before), he got the concept of giving for the greater good.

A few times I’ve given things of value to someone in the group, and they’ve dropped off a bottle of wine as a gesture of gratitude. It’s really away to get to know neighbors.

Do it for one group of items so he can see that it's a waste of time.

I see people selling kids clothes on facebook all the time, so I gave it a go. It wasn't worth the time it took to organize and photograph and upload, but mostly I wasted a lot of time trying to meet up with people who wanted to buy the clothes. Lots of "oops, I forgot," at "oh darn, I'm working late, can we meet tomorrow?" Lots of driving around for a handful of dollars.

If it turns out well for him, let him take over the endeavor in the future. Also, give a 30 day timeline. If not sold and gone within 30 days, it goes in the trash.

Schedule 1-800-GOT-JUNK for X date. What he does or does not do before then is up to him.
