DP. I agree we all need to work on getting along. I also think most people generally do try to get along in person. My very liberal DH and I were in Trump country for the weekend and we got along with everyone just fine. We didn't go around shouting about how happy we were that Biden won. We did not discuss politics with our hosts (no idea what their views are). It's not hard. Certainly there are very real cases of in-person clashes. But I think all of the animosity really feeds off online forums there are so many people who as Jeff said have made arguing about politics and trolling people their hobby. And people respond to the trolls. I don't know how you stop that.

No kidding. It doesn't matter at all if we know or understand about the function of government (I do and so do most people BTW). Trump was voted in because of the cult of personality and he was voted out also because of his personality. No one by this time is unaware of that.
