Beetle juice is funny with what my kids call “jump scares”. Knives Out is suspenseful but not actually scary. I think both would be good for a first scary movie.

Most "classic" scary movies people tend to suggest are not very scary by modern standards, which may make them well suited for your son.
Fatal Attraction... (may not be age appropriate, but the bunny scene... scary AF). I think 'The Ring' was one of the first scary movies I saw in theaters and I was around his age; not traumatizing, but actually suspenseful unlike most horror films these days. More recent recommendations include 'Get Out' (great movie) and 'The Invisible Man' (solid option).
When I was 5, Hocus Pocus was scary, but alas...

My wife and I were talking about doing a similar movie night tomorrow. Except this would be with our three year old. Beetlejuice was on our list.
It's still a great movie for a 14 year old...
But by 14 my group of friends had already seen most of the horror movie classics, including oldies like the Exorcist. That's pretty much old enough anything should be fine.

14 is kind of old to see a scary movie for the first time. I think any of the classics - Halloween, Friday the 13th. Also the haunting of hill house was awesome.
