There is nearly zero need for dedicated snow tires in the DC area. The only people I know who maintain two sets of wheels/tires, including myself, is if our cars have summer performance tires that cannot be used in weather below 45 degrees due to the risk of cracking. Even in this case, our "winter set" is usually a good all-season performance tire like Conti DWS. We don't get nearly enough snow in this region to justify real actual snow tires.

I switched between all-season and winter tires when I lived in a place that had snow cover from December through April. In DC, we get maaaaybe snow once or twice a year, and it disappears quickly. Last year we had none at all. I wouldn't bother with the hassle of changing out tires, especially if you'd have to rent a place to store the set not being used.

Chicago person with you in this. Wtf people?

Buffalo person here. I lived in Chicago for a few years. I feel you, mate. I feel you. Your winters are very much like ours.

DC’s record snowfall solidly beats Chicago’s all-time record by half a foot.

And Chicago's average annual snowfall is more than double Washington DC's average annual snowfall. What's your point, slick?

Hahaha. I would trust a taxi in snow in DC less than my car with its summer tires. They almost all run with limited tread, "all"season tires, and don't know how to drive in snow in the first place (which given many of the drivers come from west Africa isn't too surprising).

Unless you have a sports car with very slick racing type tires I wouldn't bother.

I used dedicated winter tires and dedicated summer tires on both my Mercedes E55 and C43. These are high performance rear wheel drive cars and traction is a must. Back when we had the two blizzards they were unstoppable and got lots of stares in amazement from stuck SUV drivers. I've since switch to all weather tires for the E55 as it is not driven as much in the winter any more and recently gave away my set of winter wheels. In this area I would say if you have GOOD all weather tires like CONTI DSW or something similar you're should be good to go.
