I have the same name as my mother's godmother, who she loves, but I'm not named for her. My mom says she really liked the name, and it was the one they could agree on, and of course the fact that it was associated with someone she loved helped. But my parents knew that if they said they were naming me after her, it would bring up questions of why we didn't honor the grandmothers. It wasn't that they liked godmother better than grandmothers, they just liked her name better.

You just don’t know that many people then. I know quite a few people with unique culture specific names (I have one - I’ve only ever met 2 people with my name), and I’m white with a name from a white culture!

It’s bizarre but people do it.
