There are many reasons people would want to escape DC. The pandemic probably pushed those who had means to escape. Is this going to be the new white flight (or wealth flight these days)?

Sweetie, this is not 1994 anymore. Houses are still selling like hotcakes. My friends who moved out just went to their beach houses to ride out the pandemic. They still live in DC. We are thinking about renting a house in FL for Jan thru March. We will change our address, but we will not "move" out of DC.

I haven't seen an open air drug market in years! Where in the hell do you live? Where does DPW not pick up trash? Give me a break.

I know many families who left because of schools. Our region is just idiotic on the schools front and people realize that education is important.

But 17,000 are trying to move in.

What’s your (non)point?

Manhattan seems to have had that drop. I imagine that DC won't be far behind.

"To be fair, the group didn’t delineate between those who filed for a temporary change-of-address versus those who filed for a permanent one. So some of those over 15,000 people could have left DC for a finite period and are either planning to return eventually or already have."

In other words, this entire article is useless.

I saw a short video the other day about rents in major metropolitan areas. A real estate agent in New York said she'd never seen anything like that in her life, with so many apartments available for rent in Manhattan. Ditto for SF. I imagine, DC isn't any different.

I have a rental between U Street and Logan. I have never, ever had any trouble renting it. My tenant left about two months ago and I haven't been able to find anyone new. I'm not quite ready to drop rent yet, but I'll probably have to do it soon.

I can't imagine that this is a unique situation. I don't think prices are going to crash, but I do think there will be a lasting (at least mid-term) impact.

I work for a large property management firm in DC. Our condos in Arlington, Alexandria and DC are at the highest vacancy rates I've seen in 11 years. We have dropped rents across the board and still they sit vacant.

By that standard, pretty much no city or town is safe. EVERYWHERE has crime.

DC could do so much better with crime. the random metro stuff, the property crime/car window smash ins... they need a strategy and haven't bothered. That's quality of life issues for most residents right there.
