I remember having to watch it for a class in high school (MCPS) back in the late 90's. I remember a group of us watched it together and were horrified by the events. It was so moving and eye-opening that we were all in tears.

It's pretty much peak Spielberg (or at least Serious Spielberg), so if his tendencies bother you this might not be the movie for you.

If you're looking for one movie to watch about the Holocaust, consider Shoah.

NP, agree to disagree. I did not think that was cheesy. Somebody mentioned Life Is Beautiful, which I thought was just a terrible movie - super cheesy. I was only able to watch a few scenes from it (I illegally downloaded it thinking it would be good and quickly realized it sucked). The main character looks like he's only missing makeup to be a clown, and so much of the music and script seems like something a child would write. For better or worse, Schindler's List is probably the best holocaust film there is. Unless you want to get into straight up horror or intentional fictional accounts like Inglorious Basterds or OverLord or something like that.

Polanski’s The Pianist and even Life Is Beautiful are much better (they cover the same subject). Just rewatched it after seeing it when it first came out.

Life is Beautiful is far too unrealistic.

Schindler's List is a good film, but it's a Spielberg film, for good and ill.

I remember seeing it so vividly. I was in high school and my friends and I saw it in the theater. I actually had a physical reaction that I still cannot forget that sent me running to the restroom. Could have been a stomach bug, but the timing was uncanny.i want my kids (half Jewish) to see it. They’re still too young.

Life is Beautiful is far too unrealistic.

I saw it in the movie theater when it came out, sitting next to my dad who was a survivor of Russian pogroms (and who luckily emigrated to Palestine upon his family's release from the Russian work camp so they were out of harm's way during the Holocaust). We both cried our eyes out. The idea of asking "is it as good as the reviews" feels so tone-deaf to me. It's not entertaining by any means. It's beautifully filmed, heartbreaking, and terrifying to watch.

I remember watching it as a matinee when it came out. I never cried fully during the movie but I was tearing the entire time. It truly affected me .

Agree it’s heart wrenching. I was so moved. Also heard a speech several years by woman who was not be of children saved by Mr Schindler. Her talk was amazing. And yes kids should see part of that film in high school history
