Simply not in my experience. That’s the truth. The nannies I know are all very involved with the kids. The mothers I know tend to be on their phones. I’m not in DC, btw.

I was at a park with my nk. (Not in DC at the time, pre Covid)

Nannies on the ground in the sand area. While talking with each other they engaged with the children. All the children. Building, playing, in the sand. Or a few would move to the swings. Or sit on the benches and nks have snacks. But they were engaging with this charges. And they had to deal with soooo many other kids — kids who’s moms strolled in, parked on a bench. Face in the phone not paying attention. Only looking up when another mom would stroll in sitting next to other moms away from the kids.
The nannies - helping and playing with those children who’s moms say in the corner talking and scrolling through FB

So while the nannies may chat together- at least they are attending to the children.

But you know moms need a “break” from their kids.

Sounds right to me for a great nanny. However if it’s too much for you, it’s too much for you. No shame in that. The nanny share will find someone else quickly so don’t feel quirky for backing out. Daycares are open and safe now. Better a good daycare than a bad nanny.

Folks please keep in mind that not all nannies are married or have a second income. Many of us have to live on our salaries and need to live close enough to our employers so that we can be reliable. If you can't afford a nanny look into other options.

$39600/yr / 52wk/yr = $761.54/wk
$761.54/wk / 5days/wk = $152.31/day

That’s a little high, but not astronomical.

Ok, backtrack a bit. You don’t state the hours or rare, so let’s look at that.

$761.54/wk / 40hours/wk = $19.04/hr if it’s 40 hours, no overtime. That’s a bit high.
$761.54/wk / 47.5hours/wk (45 worked hours, 5 hours overtime at 1.5x) = $16.03/hr That’s more reasonable, and during covid, you’ll be hard pressed to find lower.
$761.54/wk / 55hours/wk (50 worked hours, 10 hours overtime at 1.5x) = $13.85/hr That’s a steal, especially during covid.

So, how many hours and what’s the rate? Also, what are the qualifications (education, experience, target language)? Talking solely in terms of gross monthly is not really possible.

Right, but some things that PP didn't include are the cost of having a nanny, like taxes, workers' comp insurance and nanny's health insurance. I don't know what they come out to be per month, but that would certainly decrease the actual pay of the nanny. Plus, OP never did answer the question about OT. If you are looking at 10 additional hours a week, plus taxes, workers' comp insurance and health insurance (plus maybe a payroll service), then it doesn't sound out of line to me.
