The looting and destruction during the last time around has contributed to a large number of stores boarding up permanently. Been to Georgetown lately? Friendship Heights? Abandoned stores don’t factor in creating safe neighborhoods.

Nothing in Spring Valley was looted. The window to CVS was smashed, and that's technically AU park.

Um no, CVS was totally looted (not just their window) and businesses up and down MacArthur were looted.

The looting and rioting and fires after MLK died in the 60's destroyed block after block after block. Dad was downtown taking a CPA
cram course. He managed to get back home to Bowie after the rioting, fires and looting started but it was dangerous.
The areas that were destroyed did not recover for 30 years.

If you riot/loot-you will not win me to your cause. Otherwise, i'm listening. Just sayin'

You’re the only one thinking that everyone assumes that.

Are you new to DC?

Maybe don't plan you're evening stroll by the White House. But otherwise? I don't see any reason for alarm.

If there's unrest it will be in places like GA, where the governor is brazenly contributing to voter suppression.

Are those of you who are fearful of "unrest" the same ones locked inside your houses for the last 7 months?

We've thought about it.

Nope. I plan on staying away from downtown, but certainly not planning to leave town.

I'm surprised by the replies but I'll take them!

The consensus on our block/in our neighborhood is that people are mildly concerned. I know a bunch of folks with plans to leave town and others are discussing it.

I was wondering what the broader group-think is. Glad to know that we are overreacting.

Like Union Station off the redline? I can't imagine any other NW redline stop where you'd be even a weeny bit concerned about sitting at home that night.

I live 2 blocks from Union Station and have absolutely no worries about this.

There is one place where I'd be worried: 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. (and perhaps a few blocks around it).

I am not worried at all about election day in DC--it's swing states and places with broad open carry laws that would get me nervous.

We did leave town last inauguration and might consider doing that again, depending on how things are looking with covid, weather, politics, etc. We live less than a mile from the Mall.
