We were chasing merit aid... and had no idea which schools would offer more or less, or any. So our child applied to a LOT of schools.

What? The common app schools have at most one tiny little extra essay prompt. Many are also free this year so blasting them out all over is a reasonable strategy.
Top schools require multiple. Some kids are writing 15-20 essays.
