Did you gett the x ray bcs of his sport? Because this is a worry for you that he won't make the "pros" bcs of his height? If the answer is yes, your poor child!

Who does bone age for a 14 year old that is 5'4" I am confused. I thought these were done if a kid was below a certain percentile?
DS had it done at 13, and he was below 1% percentile in height and weight. Is he skinny, you DS? That would be the only reason I can see that endo would order bone x rays.

OP, if your son is only 14 I would be very surprised if he was done growing. Most boys have not even come close to their final height at that age.

Our HS starting point guard was 5'3" and an All Star in a big basketball state.

My DS is like this. GREAT at soccer, but his true love is basketball. His height kept him from playing varsity HS basketball, our school's team is crazy competitive and no one under 5'10" on the team. But he accepted it and was fine. He continued with soccer and may even play in college.

It's disappointing, and we want them to play what they love, but it's just how it works out.

Sounds like he’s doing great and that his natural ability will help offset the size differential.

There’s nothing you can do about this.

I have a 5’4” 15 yo who’s also basically through puberty. He might not grow any more at all! But he’s a happy, healthy kid with lots of friends. Count blessings, and all that.

They should have basketball teams that let shorter people play against shorter people.

I know in the 80's there was a Guatemalan basketball league in NYC - my Jewish boyfriend played with them. There was a height cap.

Trust your kid to navigate this. It’s going to be a bigger issue for basketball than baseball. He’ll find other ways to play or other things he enjoys if he can’t play HS basketball. Take a deep breath and remember that disappointments are part of life. It’s not your job to protect your kid from them, but to help him navigate them and build resilience. I have a very athletic kid who is tall but slight. He is also 14 and already clearly knows the role size plays in sports. Your son does too. He’ll be fine.

How about track and cross country? Many runners aren’t very big and/or tall. Also golf, gymnastics, baseball, lacrosse are all good sports for the vertically challenged.

I have a 6’2” baseball player. He is pretty good, but he regularly gets beaten by short kids. Short boys have a smaller strike zone, they often are wicked fast, and if they have good mechanics they can drive the ball. Are most major leaguers talk? Sure, because it adds a little bit of reach and power. But in high school baseball its really going to be the kid, not the height.

I think you’re making a big deal out of something that your son might not even care about. The captain of one of my kids high school swim team is barely 5’5”. I see shorter kids playing all kinds of sports at both my kids schools.
