If toddler's behavior is an aberration, this might be the 18-month sleep regression. Try not to form any bad habits (like new feedings) until it passes.

My 16 month old DD occasionally does this. I check her diaper, rock her for a minute and then put her back in her crib. Light stays off the whole time. If she cries, I sit next to the crib and talk to her until she calms down (it usually takes her 5 min). When she realizes I'm not lifting her out again, she lies down and goes to sleep. The only time she doesn't is if her diaper is bothering her.

Get headphones or a sound machine for your daughter.

Do not play with him. You can tell him it's sleeping time, rub his back, but don't bring him to your room for playtime.

Try to stay out of his room unless he is crying, actually crying not just protesting betime and you not coming to play with him.

Keep a lovie or books in his bed so if he wakes up he can look at those.
