We are in that situation now with us upstairs and kids downstairs. It’s annoying AF to walk downstairs in the middle of the night for wake ups. We lock the front door.

Our master bedroom is on the third floor, and both (elementary age) kids bedrooms are on the second. We’ve never had issues with this.

Maybe if master is on first floor and others are on second floor. Never if extras are on a lower floor.

Fair enough but I do think your realtor was right about the issue coming up as a resell factor. Eyes wide open.

It would be a deal breaker for me not to have us all on the same floor. Sometimes we rent houses like this (beach etc) and it makes me uncomfortable.

I really wanted this, but we could not find anything in our price range. Kids wound up sharing a room on the same level as us when we moved in (they were 5 and 2) and then we moved downstairs when they were 8 and 5. Has not been an issue, ever. So, I’d say not a dealbreaker for everyone as you’re seeing on this thread.

Dealbreaker for me and always will be. My kids are 12 and 14 now.

We don’t like it, but have heard that it’s okay as long as they are above you. But that’s a real problem in a fire.

Doesn't matter after the baby stage. My 5 year old has been in her new big girl room upstairs since 3.5. Master and nursery are on the main and more bedrooms upstairs. Shes fine and happy, can come down at 6 am to snuggle just fine. We have really creaky stairs so i hear her 1st step down. After the first week its never come up that shes on a different floor. She loves the independence and has her own bathroom up there too and can use it without help.

Want me to blow your mind even more? We didn't have a baby monitor.

Split levels are not the same.

+1

This. we looked at a house where the master was upstairs and smaller rooms were downstairs and it was lovely, but not interested!

Never mattered to me. Kids were in my room until 3 months and after that they sttn. If you’re worried about hearing a baby, you have a monitor. My oldest is 4 and would get me if something were wrong

For one thing, trudging up and down steps in the middle of the night to deal with an infant and a preschooler sounds horrible. But also, it would be a safety risk for me. What if theres a fire or something? Once they are both a bit older (like, youngest maybe around 7 or so), I think I would be ok with it.

+ 1

We bought our house last summer when kids were 2 and 4. Our oldest likes to come in our room around 5/6 am to snuggle before the alarm goes off and I don’t want anyone schlepping up and down stairs in the middle of the night. Seems like that would be especially tough during the newborn stage.

But even more so, I’m terrified of an emergency. I can’t even imagine the horror of a house fire with kids on a different level. A friend told me a story of a family whose children were killed when the parents in the main level master bedroom could not get to them. There’s also just the run of the mill reasons that could come up too like a toddler puking middle of the night.

I just sleep better with my kids easily accessible to me.
