They are rationing tests because they have to. It’s as simple as that. Ideally we would all be testing more frequently.

OP it’s likely just a cold. Look at it this way - for most kids covid symptoms are very similar to cold and flu symptoms. So if your kid ends up having covid and the symptoms are mild then it really isn’t that different from any other illness. If you have mild symptoms then again it isn’t that different from any other illness. The issue here is is the unlikely chance your kid has covid and can spread it to others. I say unlikely cuz covid rates are low. Just follow your doctors instructions and test if the fever comes back. Isolate in the meantime.

Not to hijack OPs thread. But our middle child (3) who is in preschool woke up with a runny nose. No fever. Are we supposed to get him tested?

OP here. I don’t think I am? We took her to her doctor 4 hours after we took her temperature the first time. Following her doctors advice we are not testing her unless her temperature goes back up. It’s been below 100 all day.

your doctor’s plan isn’t taking into account the broader situation. stay home and get tests.

We got our youngest DD tested a few weeks ago, out of an abundance of caution (she's in daycare), and it was just a quick, shallow nasal swab, not the deep swab. She did fine with it, and she's just a baby. Test was negative, and none of the rest of us ever had any symptoms, so likely just a cold, as our pediatrician suspected. Other illnesses are still circulating, but symptoms overlap so much, especially in young children!
