Greenwich Village is way better.

+1. We've been in the West Village for 25 years and I will never leave. So beautiful, slower pace of life, a few really great buildings with amazing amenities or a brownstone if that's your thing (and in your budget), amazing parks and playgrounds, on the water, easy walk to SoHo or Chelsea or Tribeca, a real neighborhood feel, amazing restaurants, GREAT schools, Chelsea Piers (if you have kids - they have so many sports and activities). Way harder to find something good and cheap here but you'll find a great place for 5 mil.

PP here. Agreed. My parents moved us into NYC when I was 14, after living in Westchester. We were on 9th street and 5th Ave in a terrific brownstone. I was so upset when they moved after we went to college, but at least it wasn’t far. They wanted to downsize, so now they’re in an apartment in the Flatiron District.

I’m down in DC (just lurking on the NYC board ) but would love to move back to NYC one day.

We are seeing much better apartments on the east side so I think we will likely end up moving across town. Our kids are in a private school on the UWS and I would say like 30-40% of the kids are going on the UES. And we have several friends on the UWS who send their kids to school on the east side.

You really can’t go wrong with either neighborhood and they both truly have the same amenities in my opinion.

That cross town commute would kill me!

Both are nice in different ways. UES has more modern high rises with amenities if you prefer that. You’ll get more for your money assuming you don’t want to be on park avenue or something. Also, working in midtown can mean many things. If you live on the upper west and your office is on 44th and lex or something, it will be a decent walk once you get off the train. Not terrible but may add an extra fifteen minutes or so. From friends who are still in the city (we left last year) port authority area is getting really bad post covid and some of that activity is moving uptown. East side may be experiencing less of that. Don’t listen to anyone telling you to move to Greenwich village with kids. That’s madness.

I love the UWS. Would choose it over the east side any day. So much character.

I'm an UWSer myself so that's what I'd recommend. I admit I don't have that much experience on UES, but whenever I go over there, it feels either soulless/neighborhood-less or if you're in the ritzy part, very stuffy and stepford-wife-ish.

We're lowkey and casual and liberal here on the UWS.

I'd do UWS over UES in Manhattan. You could also consider Park Slope - has everything you're looking for, and not too bad a commute to midtown. With that budget you could get a beautiful brownstone.

How do you not know that before you put down $5 Million on a place? Have you visited?

If you are Jewish and like hummus, foreign films, wear mostly flats, have no friends that vote republican and think football is stupid, you are an UWS person.

If you are waspy, dye your hair blonde, are a lady who lunches, and wish you had more time to spend in Palm Beach or Cape Cod, you are an UES person. Duh.

UWS all the way. No comparison to Riverside Park. UES always felt like weirdly suburban and souless to me. Can you rent for a year before you decide?

I live on UWS, but UES has better public schools overall, so that's something to consider. Also, UES doesn't have SROs and other transitional housing like the UWS.

West side best side!
