My just turned 5 year old is in a half day preschool class of older 4’s/younger 5’s. They wear masks all day except when eating. No shared supplies, they can pick out a toy box each day to play with. They wear masks outside now because of the recent virus surge, but didn’t used to (and I think when this surge starts to decrease and when the weather starts to warm up again, they’ll go back to no mask outside). The tables and carpet spots for circle time are set up to allow for some distance, but definitely not 6 feet. There is no mingling of classes, they used to allow 2 classes to use the outdoor playground at a time but now it’s just 1, so they don’t get playground time every day to allow for all the classes to go on the playground. But they do get outside time every day unless raining.

You expect 2 yo kids to be at least 6 feet apart? hahaha!

Do they need to wear masks outside. I think the fresh air (minus masks) is so important.

My kid goes to a home day care where all the kids are under 3 so they don't wear masks. The provider and her assistant (a family member) don't either, except during drop-off and pick up, because its their home. They haven't had any cases yet, even though they never closed as an essential worker day care, but as the numbers are higher than ever I'm wondering if the mask thing should have been a deal breaker. We figured since she is in her home 24/7, masking all day would barely delay the spread if she were sick...but are we being really dumb here?

6-10 foot social distancing in a home day care is just not possible though. That would require a lot of space.

My kid's 4-5 year old class teachers do a surprisingly good job of enforcing masks stay on. Whenever I go pick up, I only see maybe one kid whose mask is falling down not covering the nose.

But social distancing? Good luck trying to enforce that. The classroom is not big enough to spread out the kids and kids play with each other, plus they sit at the big tables with maybe 1 foot distance. But masks seem to be working well. The daycare has been open almost 5 months, with one covid case, but zero infection, zero outbreak from the positive case.
