Was going to suggest any of David MacCaulay's books, or The Works by Kate Ascher. It's pretty NYC specific and doesn't only cover buildings, but it's really cool, gets into engineering and architecture, and has neat pictures. She also has one on skyscrapers that might be even better for your kid.

Usborne’s See Inside Bridges, Towers and Tunnels is kind of neat. If they don’t have it in the US usborne shop try used book websites.

I like the book "What It Feels Like to Be a Building," which talks about different structures in terms of pressure.

Iggy Peck, architect is a fun book with some good architecture in the fun illustrations.
