+1 except for cats. Cats are fine, but only if they’re dog like.

I grew up with big dogs and my family all have big dogs. We recently got a shih tzu and everybody loves him. My parents is big and poorly behaved and my sister had our dog on her lap, and was like “this is kind of amazing, never considered having a dog you can just pick up and love around”. We got the small dog cause we have a small house. No yard. It works for us.

+1 There is a trend afoot, though, and I think it's of first-time dog owners getting much bigger dogs (all kinds of doodles). I used to know so many Yorkie/French Bulldog/Pomeranian/Dachsund owners that had never had a dog before, and I actively wondered whether I didn't like the breeds, or didn't like dogs with little to no training. Now that the first time owners all have labra/golden/sheepa-doodles, I realize the truth is that I don't like dogs with little to no training (and particularly owners who think that's cute).

People with small dogs always seem to train them less, though, on the theory that "at least he won't kill anybody!"

Nope. Everyone I know who doesn't like little dogs have never liked little dogs. Myself included

I love all the dogs so much.

I’m a woman and only like big fluffy dogs. I also like cats. I don’t like small, yippie dogs, though some are cuter than others. They’re just not my cup of tea.

Still little. If we start talking 50-75 pounds then we're getting into big dog territory.

I have met some small dogs I've liked, particularly a couple of French bulldogs and a cavapoo, none of which were barky or hyper. We also had a relatively big dog (Irish setter) when I was young who was a complete disaster. But generally speaking, I'm a big dog person and always have been for reasons of temperament.

And we have a big dog right now (Labrador, 70+ pounds and maybe more to grow) and the joke is that she never barks. We've heard her bark maybe two or three times in her whole life!

I think little dogs became more popular 10-20 years ago, their humans started taking them everywhere, and people found that annoying.

I grew up in a neighborhood where most dogs were big, easygoing family pets. The little dogs were higher-maintenance and yappy.

I’d rather deal with a poorly trained little dog than a poorly trained big dog any day of the week.

Honestly, it’s probably sexism/internalized sexism. Cats and small dogs are associated with women and femininity and therefore on some level considered inferior.

And the deep, loud barks of a big dog aren’t annoying?

Because little dogs are annoying. They're loud, yappy, jump on people, and their owners tend to abuse rules and call them "emotional support animals" and bring them everywhere.

I'm not a dog person, but big dogs are much more chill, for the most part.
