Much of the reason there were spikes from protests is because of police behavior. It was atrocious. Protesters were wearing masks and keeping distance outside, but when you’re tear gassed and locked up with other people, it kind of throws those things out the window.

I've see the reports saying there may have been some impact, and they also point to other much more high-risk, indoor activities occurring at the same time. And I don't believe Osterholm said zero impact, just not very large. This is in keeping with numerous reports now coming out talking about how we really need to focus on the risk from indoor activities.

Have you listened to the Osterholm Update? It's brilliant and as far as you can get from political. He even said masks aren't a panacea and got a lot of flack for it from the left. Sorry but he's a lot smarter than any of us. It really speaks to where we are as a country that even experts like him are seen as political.

COVID in CA skyrocketed. Did you not see the videos and pics of the protesters that were jam packed like sardines prior to CA's out of control COVID cases? The spike in COVID in CA literally perfectly coincides with the timing of the protests and a 2-3 week incubation period. The media and health authorities are just too PC to admit that the protesters contributed to the spread.

Same. It feels wrong not to be there, but with my kids needing care, spouse work deadlines, and covid, I just can't do it. Those who do go have my deepest respect. I will give to some good orgs today instead.

It’s a question of acceptable risk.

It’s not worth the risk to others just so you can go jogging.

It IS worth the risk to others to get rid of trump.

See the difference, dummy?

Thanks for elevating the level of discourse. It is clear that you are contributing to a better world.

Michael Osterholm pointed out in today's podcast that the protests didn't result in huge spikes in cases because they were outdoors and people were masked.

If you go jogging you should have a mask with you. But joggers without masks are not a huge threat. Be more worried about college students partying.

I totally believe in everything that blm stands for but the protests were about two to three weeks before we saw a huge jump in cases of covid among young people in July. They definitely contributed to the summer surge.

That was from people partying July 4th week.

Having a mass gathering of any type is literally the dumbest thing possible at this moment in time. Luckily, the Silent Majority, both black, white, and latino will soldier on and do what we have to do to get our kids educated and the bills paid.

In that case, it's odd that public-health experts are saying either that they didn't, or that it's not possible to tell whether they did or didn't. Don't you think?

Yeah, real odd that they didn’t want to lose their jobs for blaming the BLM protests for the increase in cases. You’re crazy if you don’t think this entire virus is political.

180,000 people might disagree with you, but they're not here to say so, because they're dead.

I have not seen anyone more committed to defeating this virus than Michael Osterholm. Figuring out whether something contributed to a rise in cases is not just about looking at national data - it's a lot more specific than that. People like Michael Osterholm are doing the work to figure this out. You are not.

This. You protest, you lose your right to complain about anything COVID-related. Social contract.

Nah. I'm going, I'll stay distant, I'll keep my mask on. And I'll keep complaining about people who don't understand that your mask is supposed to cover your nose as well as your mouth.
