The changing times post is right. A family friend owns a beautiful old summer home in the Berkshires (near Edith Wharton's old house) that was originally built for the very wealthy and it has few bathrooms and they're very small.

Yes the realtor basically told my mom that 3 small bathrooms (they're small, one is just a sink and shower stall) for a two-story house with 6 large bedrooms was going to make it harder to sell even in a very desirable area in CA. I know that a lot of people will knock out things like storage closets/pantry areas to get an extra bathroom in.

Because those of us who grew up poor vividly remember having to smell dad's poops when we used the one family bathroom, going on vacation and having to smell everyone's poop when we used the one motel room bathroom, having to use a bathroom that someone had recently vomited in, etc.
I think that for me one of the signs of having truly arrived in not having to smell anyone else's poop or other bodily secretions, and having privacy to poop. Anyone who remembers people banging on the door for you to hurry up because they also had to go?

I have friends with a 7500 sf house, not quite a mansion, but huge. They custom built it. It has 6 bedrooms and 7 full, 3 half baths.

Basement is divided. There is a walkout basement to the large backyard with pool and a basement workout room. Large full bath there so you can shower after workout and the full bath is next to the walkout door so that you can come in from the back yard and go right into the bathroom. Other side of the basement is an entertainment room set up as a home theater and has a half bath so you don't have to use the "gym" bathroom and also gives two bathrooms on that level if you have a movie night/entertainment night and people don't have to go up and down stairs to get to the bathroom.

First floor is large and there is a half bath by the front and one back by the kitchen and door to the garage. When you are entertaining and have a large gathering, people don't have to wait for the bathroom and don't have to wend their way around people to get across the house to the bathroom. I've been there for large holiday gatherings and two bathrooms is nice. In the odd case that you need more, they can send people downstairs instead of upstairs, plus the full bath downstairs is a great place for parents who need more room for changing diapers for example (I have twins so the big bathroom downstairs was wonderful when I had to change diapers). So, four bathrooms in the public areas for large social events with no one having to go upstairs to the private bathrooms.

Six bedrooms upstairs with full en suite for each (although the smallest room's bathroom was jack & jill shared with the hallway.

So, 6 BR, 10 Ba (7 full, 3 half)

My dream is to have his-and-hers bathrooms in the master suite.

I suspect that those people who can afford to buy houses with that bathrooms aren’t the ones doing the actual cleaning.

We are building a four bedroom house that will have 5 full baths and two half baths, plus a full bath in pool house.

One full for each of the full bedrooms on the second floor. 1 full bath between DHs office and gym on first floor. Powder rooms at each end of main hall for easy access to dining and entertaining areas.

We have 9 bathrooms , with two powder, 7 bedrooms

Huh. It's a negative for me. Who wants to clean that many bathrooms. And I object as a philosophical matter to kids having their own bathroom. They should share. They'll sure as heck be sharing when they're older. No need to raise prince/princesses who can't share.

Perfect set-up in my opinion is a reasonable master bath, one upstairs bathroom for everyone else to share, and powder rooms on the first floor and basement. Maybe a full bath in the basement if there is a guest room there.

Mansions usually have old rich people living in them. Bladder control is an issue.

Mansions also have large staff and it is convenient to have 1/2 bathrooms near the laundry room, butler's pantry, garage etc.

Yup, this. It’s a convenience thing. If a house is truly huge, I could see there being 4 powder rooms on the main floor and 4 in the basement.
