If you both have above average fertility, then even the small amount of sperm in precum can be enough for conception. Plus, people get sloppy and either forget to abstain around ovulation or pull out too late. Lastly, the further into your 30's you get, the more common it is to have slightly irregular cycles - you could ovulate a few days earlier or later, ovulate two eggs, etc. Just because you've done it successfully for years does not mean you won't have a surprise early ovulation one cycle and end up pregnant. You don't want another pregnancy, then use a diaphragm or some other barrier method until you're ready to TTC.
