Why does your MIL think six months is normal? If it’s going well and both mom and baby are happy, breastfeeding is just so much easier than bottles and formula. If you’re going back to work, pumping is a pain and you have to deal with bottles but if you’re with your baby the next months/year are golden!

I only did three months with the first and 1 month with the second due to a medication I desperately needed for postpartum anxiety.

DC1 self weaned at 18 months, was down to twice a day from about 14 months on. He loved his milk bottle until we took it away around age 3, and then just wouldn't touch milk after that.

DC2 is 14 months now and LOVES nursing. She nurses 5-6 times a day. I don't even know where to start, but I think I'll let her nurse until about age 2 or so. I know it's a big comfort thing for her right now. She'll go off to play with her brother happily for an hour then come for some nursing and cuddles for 10 minutes, and go off again.

17 to 18 months. I was home with DD for the first year so it was easy. I went back to grad school after that first year and her daycare was right on campus so I continued to breastfeed her morning, before nap and at night for six months. Then she wanted cows milk morning and night and just wanted to nurse before nap at daycare. I know by that point it was just the connection and cuddles and not the milk. I let her decide when to stop.

1st - EBF until 5 months, then added in some formula and weaned at 9 months

2nd - 4 months, allergies were too much to handle

3rd - 12 months, started adding in some formula around 9/10 months

These answers are not typical, OP. https://www.cdc.gov/breastfeeding/data/facts.html

But you should do what’s right for you and your baby.

+1, except I got pregnant at 15 months.

Still breastfeeding an almost 4 yo (just a little bit) and 15 mo. There's no rule that says you have to wean. Definitely not at 6 months.

2 months (unresolved latch issue, switched to formula)
2 years
28 months
3.5 years

Do what works for you, the length varies for everyone. There's no right or wrong amount of time.

I was thinking at 12 months and going straight to cows milk but my MIL raised her eyebrows at that and seemed to think 6 months was normal. That won’t sway me into any action about it but I guess I’m just looking for some general feedback to get a sense of what the average age is to wean?

Depends on where/when MIL had kids. I can say that in some circles where women are expected to have multiple kids close together in age, there is often pressure to wean on the early side so you can start working on another pregnancy/kid (particularly if you don't yet have a son to carry on the family name).

13 months, pretty much weaned on his own.
