Schools always start early in the south because of football.

Yeah I have cousins and her children start in mid-august and get out at the end of May. She told me it's just as weird that we don't start until after labor day we're right before labor day and then go until mid-june.

My kids' school that starts in early August has a 1 week break in mid October. It's a great time for a mini vacation!

In some parts of the country, the weather in June is much nicer than the weather in August. No one there is complaining about being out of school for the entire month of June and then going back in early August.

It's also a better schedule for taking AP exams, since they get an extra month of schooling before the exams and very little dead time after.

Schools get more time before AP exams, and other state tests. School is over right after testing is done. Up here kids do NOTHING in late May or June in school.

I like the southern school schedule way more than the northeast one. And the DC one that has a million interruptions and goes through most of June. June is a lovely month to have off to vacation.

Not all schools have a/c. I cannot imagine starting school in early August here in MD with no a/c. My school doesn’t have it and the beginning of the year and end of the year can be brutal.

This is why I think the schedules happened. Down south where its always warm year-round so it's more flexible when its open/closed. Up north, buildings for schools don't have AC so they need to be out of session during the hottest months of July and August.

Have you ever lived in the deep South? It's horrible in August, might as well go to school.in the air conditioning. It's much more pleasantly summer like in late April / early May. That's the time you want off..

From Alabama and we have gone back at this time for at least 25 years when I was in school. We also get out early May.
