My DD at age 9 had her two baby canine teeth pulled. X-rays show her adult teeth are growing in sideways and our orthodontist thought this might give her a chance to avoid *extreme* (chains on teeth) orthodontics. She also has an expander and will soon be getting a semi-permanent retainer until the rest of her adult teeth appear. We saw the orthodontist for my older daughter who mostly needs cosmetic help and were shocked to learn how much correction our younger daughter will need to accommodate her adult teeth.

Dr. Park at CC Oral Surgery was excellent. The total cost was around $750 with our Guardian insurance covering none of it.

This is us too. My child is frightened of pulling out her own teeth so usually we need the dentist.

yeah, I had 10 baby teeth pulled at age 10 because they were not coming out. went on to have orthodontia and now have a healthy smile.

My three all had baby teeth “lingering” when they were no longer needed. They were easily removed by a dentist. It was annoying to have to pay for something that should have been natural.

I think the dentist jumped gun a little. My son had shark teeth for six months or more, finally I couldn't wait around and pulled them out using dental floss. The teeth looked like only the top half I suppose the roots have been dissolved but I am not certain. Anyway he is not complaining so I guess it's okay.

Son had two pulled by dentist - X-rays revealed roots like nothing I've ever seen on baby teeth so they were pulled. No way were they coming out on their own.

One of mine had shark teeth and we didn’t pull anything and it turned out fine.

I do agree that pediatric dentists seem to always want to do procedures on kids. Maybe family dentists are already getting enough money from expensive adult crowns so they don’t need to push for unnecessary stuff in kids.

Sounds normal in this case but with dental work I get a second opinion for pretty much any major procedure.

No, actually, I didn't--I meant what I said. We see a family dentist who told us it was nothing to worry about. All my friends who have pediatric dentists are the ones who had kids' baby teeth pulled. My friends with pediatric dentists always seem to be having work done on their kids' teeth, which makes me think they overprescribe treatment.

Looking at this thread because our pediatric dentist also wants to pull out my kid’s shark teeth. My older DD did not have hers pulled (different dentist).

It does feel like this is the case.

I have three kids. The first one I was hesitant to pull baby teeth and let nature take its course. Nature did not. Mouth was jacked up with misaligned teeth everywhere. 8k after insurance for orthodontia. 2nd kid- allowed for Some baby teeth pulling to make room and spacing. Saved from jaw surgery and minor orthodontia. 4k after insurance. Last kid- allowed to pull when ex ray show adult teeth coming in and making room. Perfect straight teeth. 0 orthodontia. just my personal experience.
