I am a dog snob and just say no because I only want to live with smaller, cute dogs. I don't think pitbulls are cute. I like dogs with hair - most of the poodle-mixes are cute, Westies are cute, etc.

I'm not against pits as a whole. But I think their temperament is very much a result of 1. Where they are from. Fight dogs are going to be different and 2. How they are raised.

FWIW I have been attacked by a dog, and it's generally a breed that people think of as very friendly. So I don't judge too much



I was bitten by a black lab and a golden retriever. I was an adult and these were pets of people I knew. A poorly trained dog of any breed is a bite risk.

Yes but I'd be ready to train with the dog... forever. A lot of people start out training and then think the dog has "got it" and stop. That isn't a breed specific thing, it's the only way to responsibly own a dog IMO, but I do believe it's extra important with strong breeds. Training involves commands and exercise. Take the dog for lost of walks, hikes, swims and have him or her listen to you, follow basic commands, do drills and give treats. Exercise before training helps to tire the dog and in my experience they follow commands better after burning off some energy. If you're willing to work to build a rapport with the dog you'll have a greater chance of success.

We have extended family and friends with pit bulls. None came from an abuse (fighting) situation or had a history of aggression. All were surrendered because of legal changes in local laws or the previous owner’s new partner freaking out at the dog simply being that breed. They are all derpy lovebugs who do not know that they are supposed to be scary. That said, I was a slow convert. I used to be terrified of them as well.

Nope. I will not be around a pit bull or other dog that makes me nervous. I witnessed a “tame, gentle” pit bull one bite off 1/3 the face of a kid once and I’ll never forget it.
