This is not ok.

PP, this is the reason that a lot of daycares, schools, and kids have a forbidden list -- people you are specifically NOT authorizing to pick up your kid, and where they should attempt to contact you should a person on the forbidden list make such an attempt.

But that would still require doing ID checks on anyone not recognized on sight. I would certainly escalate the complaint.

I emailed the director when it was my mom and she apologized and said it wouldn’t happen again. And I could always let them know if he’s coming. I got surgery today and my husband had a last minute meeting. I sent my dad and wasn’t able to let them know he was coming, but I shouldnt have to. There are a dozen people DD would run up to but I don’t want them taking her home. If she got hurt, I’d sue them for every penny they have.

If there are people you know that your daughter would recognize and seem happy to see, who you think would hurt your kid, then you need to talk to the daycare about those specific people and share photographs and names.

Daycare did wrong here, they should have checked, but this is the kind of thing that daycares need to know. If someone who would do that to a child is in the vicinity, I need to know not to bring the child to the outside pick up spot, until I have checked ID.

Sure, it makes sense to have special procedures for at-risk situations (e.g., messy divorces), but I wouldn't be freaked out if they weren't checking IDs at my kids' daycare. (Actually, I know they don't. I had to have a friend pick up my kids one day and there definitely wasn't an ID check involved. I just texted ahead of time.)

Texted who? The daycare? That’s giving authorization and letting them know someone else was coming. OP isn’t doing that, daycare has no idea who this stranger is, only that DD recognizes them. She cried when one of them came.
