We are redshirting our mid-July boy. Probably is ready for K but we are not sending him into an entire semester of virtual learning to start his school career.

Different states have different cutoffs- where I grew up the cutoff was Dec. 1, it might still be for all I know. But yeah, in OP's shoes, I would hold back. Eternally grateful my kid doesn't turn 5 until this winter although something tells me we may be back in the exact same place next year. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Yes, I’ve decided to red shirt my end of August daughter. I have an older elementary school student that will need a lot of my attention and help, while I am trying to work full time from home. Having to help a kindergartner with DL just seems like it will be added stress for the both of us.

How does this work? Do parents just get to unilaterally decide? Didn’t you have to consult multiple times with the teacher and principal? Curious because I have a September birthday and don’t know how to approach it

Mine will be REPEATING k! I think at this point (after tons of $$$ and working one on one) my child is ready for 1st in a normal year. But this mess? No way. We will keep working at home (while attending virtual K) and if by next summer I feel she has mastered 1st grade content, I will put her straight on 2nd grade. We elected not to redshirt our cusp-birthday kid last year but I would 100% redshirt this year due to COVID if I had the choice. DL kindergarten is no way to start school and if I had an entering kindergartner with a birthday eligible for redshirting I would just opt out of school.

I would. K isn’t about reading and writing; its about maturity and interacting with peers. You literally can’t teach that without, you know, peers.

My son has a Feb bday so I really can’t but if it were even June I absolutely would. And he is very ready in all ways.

Yes. Not just thinking about it, but already pulled the trigger. DS is repeating K. He was one of the youngest in the grades so it’s an age appropriate decision too
