Former CPS worker. There is probably more to the story. A slap isn't going to open up a CPS case. There has to be reports of marks/bruises or something else.

As I said, this was a different state. Probably the "more" to the story is that it wasn't a white family and the mom was an immigrant. IDK. But I do know that the social workers came to the school, investigated, referred to a community organization that worked with the parent and and child.

Slapping on the face isn't allowed in Canada.

still abuse

also traumatic for the kid who remembers it.

and I don't think you should necessarily believe the kid who you slapped doesn't remember it. He might be saying that to avoid disturbing memories and feelings.

You should be ashamed of yourself. What a bad parent.

There is no reason to touch a child in anger, EVER.

That was a mistake, it wasn't abusive. Its not the best idea but it happened and move on.

I’m horrified by all the people saying it is not abuse. Ya’ll are messed up. It is never ok to touch another person in violent anger.

No, its technically not abuse if it doesn't leave a mark or bruise but its obviously not the best idea except in an extreme situation and even then not a good idea.

In DC an open hand slap or hit with no lasting mark is not abuse and CPS will not investigate. It is an allowed discipline method.

Not saying that is right but that is the law.

A spouse is an equal, kids are not.

A mouthy teen getting slapped once is not abuse.

This.

Be deserved a slap and so does any other child who treats a parent with disrespect.

Have your husband or wife slap you a time or two when annoyed. Do you think it is okay if it only happens now and then. The memory and fear of it happening again sticks.

I'm now 43. I called my mom a bitch when I was 15 or so. She slapped me across the face immediately. I was spanked growing up, but that was the first time she ever slapped me.

Now, we laugh about it, and I say it was my mistake to be standing within arms reach while calling her a bitch. I totally deserved it, by the way.

I understand why this would weigh on you but consider it from a more objective perspective. Children, especially boys, need to know that the rules are important. They know they are supposed to respect their parents and they also push. He pushed too far and learned the rule better for the consequence.
