For those that used a counselor, did they recommend colleges that you would not have/did not think of?

For example, if my DC is targeting CS and we are using various sources like US News to create the list and Naviance to identify reach, target and safeties. Did any of you do this, then went to a counselor who was able to identify a school that you completely missed because it was not obvious (say, a SLAC that is top of the line in CS and gives merit aid) and you were successful in getting in?

I called around and the “premium” counselors in this area are $7-10k from applications to acceptance. I find value in college counseling but not that much. We hired someone else instead from Delaware who works virtually. At the time I thought maybe it was a downside but they all would have been virtual. They meet weekly this time of year and anticipate having all applications done by the fall. It is absolutely something you can do on your own but it’s nice to have and helpful if you have a kid that listens better to someone else.
