No. It is not irrational at all. Families like yours need to decide whether they are going to fully quarantine - and by fully I mean no social distanced outside gatherings with friends, no grocery store visits, etc - and therefore see grandparents, OR not fully quarantine (go to stores, see friends outside, etc) and therefore not see grandparents. It's one or the other. And even when you do see grandparents, it should be outside, masked, at least ten feet apart.

OK, what if you’re being careful and it’s the parents/grandparents popping into Target, omg going to the gym, going to restaurants, eating with other people AT the restaurants??

This. The aelf righteousness of people on this board regarding their parents is appalling. DH and I aren't partying, but we regularly see our younger family members. Masks inside, and ouside too if we aren't socially distancing.

Nope. We will not quarantine this virus away. We are only flattening the curve. The virus will only be gone with herd immunity or a vaccine, or enough spread that it weakens on its own.

We follow the laws. We are eating out, shopping, doing open amusements, swimming.

And we regularly see in laws in their 90s. Their request. We also shop for them, prepare food, take them to doctor's offices.

I visited my parents in May, after very strict quarantine and continued to do so util this week. DH had to go back to the office, so we stopped. I won't see them again unless we are able to fully quarantine for 10 days, which might not happen until the winter.

If you're being careful and the trip is not a hardship, you should consider going to visit while you can.

I'm a different PP (the one with a 4yo and a newborn), but I assume the PP means completely isolating the older generation. I don't know about you, but we have several older people in our family who are NOT handling the isolation well. My mom is struggling with depression and anxiety. DH's grandmother is in a memory care unit and no longer remembers her family at all, since she hasn't seen them in months, and shes now terrified of everyone around her Another elderly relative feels that, if this is how her life is to be, she has nothing to actually live for anymore.

I'm not advocating to open up all the things. I have risk factors myself and am being as cautious as I reasonably can be, but the mental health impacts of all this isolation seems to be overlooked by some.

And, no, FaceTime doesnt just cure this problem.

We are seeing the grandparents and no, we are not completely isolating. But neither are the grandparents - both my dad and FIL still work and are essential employees so they've been seeing others that way. MIL sees her sister and brother, and they see their grandkids. My mom watches my brother's kids for him as he and SIL are essential workers. We've definitely limited contact by staying away from crowds, working from home, grocery delivery, etc. but complete isolation doesn't work for us.

Grandparents are the only people we are socializing

DH’s parents have hardly followed any distancing at all. They are out and about, hosting and going to parties, FIL never wears mask, MIL works in a hospital... so we haven’t seen them to protect us and medically fragile kid. My mom lives across the country and dad passed years ago.

We saw my parents a few weeks ago. They drove from PA and visited inside our home and everything.

How long are we going to let this go on?
