But an executive order has nothing to do with what a private University chooses as names for it's schools and buildings.

If Princeton really cared about institutional racism, it would end legacy admissions. Renaming a school is easy, eliminating legacies is much harder. Until Princeton leads on that, I am not impressed.

I don't think Trump has any authority over the name of a private university's facilities. He can guard Andrew Jackson's statue on federal property all he wants.

The university did an extensive review of Wilson's record in 2015 in deciding then to reduce the number of references to Wilson on campus, but not rename the SIPA or the residential college.

Much has changed over five years. The turning point likely was the delivery of a letter to the Board of Trustees this month in which about 2/3 of the current graduate and undergraduate students at Woody Woo demanded the name change. They acted within a week of that letter.

What’s changed is we have let the outrage machine take over. As you said, the 2015 review was extensive and looked at Wilson’s acts at Princeton and beyond, looked at the historical context, and sought opinions and involvement of students and alumni. At the end of that lengthy process, a reasoned decision was made. Now, in a matter of weeks, with no reanalysis of Wilson’s deeds and misdeeds (and let’s be real, he is long dead and his actions haven’t changed in five years) and little attempt to survey opinions beyond the letter writers you cite, they have completely overturned the prior process.

I wish I still had an old Woody Woo t-shirt so I could wear it at our next reunions.

Parts of the bridge are in VA, MD and even a bit of DC -- the tiny southernmost point of the District. It is overseen now by VA and MD, according to Wikipedia:

I think there is a joint VA/MD committee that oversees bridge issues and that would be the body to deal with any renaming if and when that happens. I suspect that neither state would really resist changing the name in the current climate, and with the current governors each state has right now. With the publicity of the Princeton change, the idea of changing the bridge name is going to be coming up very soon, I'm sure!
