I can feel a noticeable difference in strength after just a few sessions. Whenever I feel like I need ibuprofen for back pain I sign up for a class the next day. It’s my most effective medicine.

Whatever you do, don’t follow KingOfTheLifts on Instagram. You’ll see lots of U18 females deadlifting 500 and guys our size doing 800 for multiples.

Rowing machine - excellent for back pain if you use proper technique. Terrific exercise and also builds bone mass.

I miss DL at the gym and squatting on the squat rack. I use to do these lifts every week for many years now if you fk up a rep with bad form you will get hurt esp the lower back. All it takes is one bad rep, I've been there. But DL really does build the lower back/trunk area whereas RDL is more hamstring/glute action.

NP. I had the opposite experience - ruptured a disc deadlifting. Twice. Working with a trainer both times. Never again.

My doctor disagrees. He said some people just shouldn’t deadlift with a straight bar. Hex bar is ok.

It's apparently pretty easy to get injured straight bar deadlifting. I've always been lucky, but I recently deloaded and went from 3x3 at a heavy weight to 4x5 at a lighter weight with a strict focus on form just to make sure. I'll go heavy again when I'm sure form is locked in.

I've also seen coaches and PTs that I trust commenting that hex bar is much less likely to injure people.

Why not dumbbells?

Same question? Why the emphasis on the barbell?
