We're a family of 3 plus my parents (who visit ALL the time) and we just bought a Ford Explorer with buckets in the second row. We love it. The buckets are automatic push of a button and fold easily for the access to the third row.

Will fairly often have an adult in 3rd row. Travel to beach a lot so need good trunk space. Looking at the following: VW atlas, Tahoe and Yukon Denali. I want bells and whistles on this car and will have it for 7+ years. Obviously we prefer the lowest price car but putting that aside, which would you pick? Thanks!

I don't know anything about the VW, but the Tahoe, Denali, and Expedition are all going to be similar in size. I've had an Expedition, and it easily fits 8 people, with the 3rd row being pretty spacious. Some people are urging you to get a Suburban, but that's significantly longer than these vehicles, unless you buy the extended version of them (i.e.,Yukon XL, Expedition EL). I believe the Suburban is the extended version of the Tahoe. A Suburban is going to give you a lot more cargo space, as is the extended versions of these SUVs. Do you really want to drive something that large on the daily, though?

Smartest post by far. And it offers more third row leg room than the GM trucks.

If you want trunk space you need a Suburban if you will be using all three rows.

You can’t put an adult in the third row comfortably in any 3 row suv. It’s for kids.

If your kids are in car seats now you’ll be fine with any suv with a decent backseat. My kids are over 6 feet and are fine in the backseat of a Honda CRV. (It doesn’t have three rows but the second row is comfortable, we don’t need extra room there). The third row will be super cramped in any suv but with two kids you won’t need it regularly anyway.

They have found time and again the Chevy Suburban is their answer. If your kids are still in car seats - you have a lot of flexibility - but the Atlas is definitely NOT your answer - and neither is the Highlander.

If you are mostly in need of a car for 5, you might consider a full size as opposed to full size + SUV and invest in a rooftop box that can flex to whatever vehicle you have in the future.

+1

We had a Highlander and got rid of it because the 3rd row is not comfortable. Plus when the 3rd row is up there is almost no room for luggage behind it. The Suburban, Toyota Sequoia, etc are the size SUVs you’ll want if you are looking for comfort and want to avoid a minivan. We prefer the SUVs but the minivans truly have the best seating comfort plus storage space.
