The Citrus biz is big biz and the cattle ranching biz is big biz in Florida. Florida is second only to Texas in raising beef cattle.

Florida has been shipping citrus out of the state since the 1920's.

The citrus families and cattle ranching families have been around long enough that I'd call them old money. They certainly are big money.

Right next to the old money Naples crowd are the retired auto workers from the midwest who have second homes in Ft Myers. They have generous pensions and generally can retire in their 40's.

This person is correct. St Augustine is the winner and you can find pockets of old money in that area too.

Agree with this poster. Many of the old money families made their money in timber or land. Southern etiquette.

This poster is correct. People who live in this area "summer" elsewhere. They generally "summer" in the northeast, Europe or a yacht.

I grew up in Jacksonville but am not old southern money. My family moved to the south right after I was born. Before Jacksonville was a city, before they had a football team or an airport with more than 1 terminal. There is a ton of old money though throughout Florida. Little pockets in different cities. Some of the old money families are the kindest and most generous families you will meet. Not flashy but proper on occasion. Obviously not all of them are this way but a fair amount are and there are lots of lovely families like this.

This is very true because many, many years ago snowbirds would drive to FL for the season and take I95 down from the north east to the east coast and I75 down from the midwest to the west coast and getting across the state wasn't easy. Sadly, more New Yorkers are discovering Naples.


My family is old money NY (I won’t take NY insult personally, I’ll choose to excuse the lack of manners) and yes, East Coasters like my family tend to have homes on the East Coast of Florida. Husband is Midwest old money and his family has a home in Naples. Many of my in-laws’ friends have same.

The old money is mainly people with second/third homes in these places. A primary residence anywhere USA, a summer house in coastal New England and a winter house in Florida.

Heh, you don't know Florida, obviously, beyond some TV shows.

Tampa - yes Tampa - has a lot of old money. It's one of the things that surprised us when we moved to the area. People would talk about someone being from "South Tampa" and it took us a while to understand that means they come from money.

St Pete - where we live - has some old money, too.
