You’re going to have to replace the other 3 in another couple years anyway because of dry rot

Man, you are frustrating to talk to OP. Did they say why? Whether you can fix or not depends on where the nail is. side or close to side, no. bottom of tire, yes, it can. Exactly where is the nail?

What us frustrating you? It can not be patched based in the location...isn't that always why with a nail?

Then you will need to replace at lest 2 tires. Best practice is to replace all four, of course, but if the other 2 are OK, you can get away with 2.

You get tire rot from UV lights if parked outside. 4 years seems too soon for tire rot though.

Same here, do 80% city driving so end up changing every 20k miles or so, esp the front tires wears out faster so frequent rotation is a must.

Concur with the other posters, if AWD and need for tire change, then you'll have do all four else the worn tires will rotate internal gears faster than the new tire (with slightly larger diameter) else you'll have mechanical issues down the road.

To OP, don't go to the tire store, their job is to sell you tires. Go to local gas station, they'll fix it for $20 or less. Or you can get $8 kit at local car part store and do it yourself .

Car and light truck tires have a design lifespan of about 60 months. Trailer tires 84 months, due to more ozone and UV inhibitors in the rubber compounds in trailer tires.

But a conventional car tire will begin to show signs of dry rot at about 4 years, and are very dangerous after 6 years, regardless of mileage.

The tire shop is correct.

Question was about replacing tire based on age...not about patching...

I have not heard of replacing tires based on age, I have only replaced mine based on tread.

You don’t need 4 tires. See if it can be patched. If it can’t be then you should only need two tires.

Yep, 4 new tires needed. Be glad your tires are old.

If it can, look at the tread and make your own call or get a patch and get an opinion from someone you trust.

If it can’t I can see maybe buying two tires.

A lot of places refuse to patch tires anymore for liability reasons.

I never used to buy that tire insurance stuff, but I do now.
