Personally, I don’t feel the need to “compromise” on what I wear in my home.

I would try to make a clean area where you can put the baby toys. You could also ask if you can lysol spray their shoes.

My kids are older so this is a non issue. We are also Asian American so we take off our shoes. The one cultural difference I just can’t understand is wearing your dirty shoes inside the house. You step on all sorts of nasty crap outside. Why would you wear those same shoes inside your home?

I think the study that showed a risk from COVID being carried on shoes was from a hospital.

I think the risk of COVID is minimal; I think you can probably rest easy on this one.

I believe there are large sticky pads that people can step on that could solve the problem. Many labs use them for clean rooms. See if your IL’s would be willing to do that but it is there home. My parents always wear their shoes or sandals and do so when they are at our house. We don’t wear shoes but I’m fine if they do.

I know I'm not germphobic, though I am concerned about Covid-19. Yes you are being unreasonable. If you're looking for a reason not to go, just don't go. But this is really no big deal.

Oh lord. I don't want to imagine what's on my dogs' paws. Ew. City streets, forest hikes... ugh. But yeah - we don't wash them either.

You're nuts. As in certifiable.

That said it’s their right to wear them since it’s their home. Could you rent something nearby and visit frequently for the pool and beach?

No way OP wants to pay. That’s the whole point - a free place to escape to.

Eh, I'm with you, OP. I think wearing shoes in the house is gross and the fact that they refuse to even consider a pretty minor accommodation for the benefit of their grandchild tells me that this wouldn't be a very pleasant visit anyway. Wait until your baby is walking.

In their OWN home? They get to make the rules in the home THEY OWN. Not their DIL.

+1, their house, their rules. Either accept it or don’t go.

A little dirt isn't going to hurt. They are not health care workers - it'll be fine. Germs will make your baby's immune system stronger (he's getting them with or w/out the shoes).

Id go. Maybe invest in a play area gate and keep the baby in one area. The floor is one thing, but i bet the rest of the house isn’t childproof so one dedicated area could maybe put you at ease.
