Lucky you! But I don’t get how a disciplined wonderful shepherd could be given up!!? That’s why I’m so leery of getting a rescue. I feel that most are problem animals. And your right about the puppy crap. They’re cute until I find them chewing on my louboutins!


I don't know! Someone somewhere loved him very much and trained him very well. They told us his original owner moved abroad. He even knows to "wait" before he eats! They told us he doesn't like other dogs, and we were like, fine, we have a fenced yard, but when we walk him he is mostly completely oblivious to other dogs.

I raised a GSD from puppyhood and he was a land shark. And he grew so fast! That's what I would worry about- you really need to socialize a dog that's going to grow that big to be safe around other people, other dogs, and children, and how can that really get done right now in this covid mess? That was part of the reason I hesitated to get a puppy despite the fact that I have young children and I was similarly worried about getting a dog with issues.


Me again- if you are open to adopting a dog and browse petfinder, try not to judge the dogs based off their photos. I don’t know what it is about shelters and rescues photographing dogs to make them look awful. Our dog looked like a terribly pathetic thing in his shelter photo and in real life he looks like a handsome purebred GSD. You can’t know for sure if it’s a purebred without papers but most of those dogs look nicer than their photos.

We got our West German GSD as a puppy when our cat was 7. She and the cat play together more than she plays with our other dog. Her prey drive is definitely strong though - when the cat is doing his zoomies around the house she will snap at him gently when he darts by her. She can't help it. We have a 15 month old and a 3.5 yo who have loved on her (always monitored) and she is so patient and gentle. If you have the energy to train and raise a puppy, I think that's the safer bet.

Aww ty but I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to my shepherds. All of them were so beautiful. This one looks like a mixed breed of some sort.
