I lived in Vienna and commuted to DC for years and it isn't something I'd recommend. If you want alternatives to Arlington, as your OP suggests, I'd look in Falls Church City, West Falls Church in Fairfax County near Route 7, or the handful of McLean neighborhoods near Chain Bridge and Old Dominion (West McLean, Bryn Mawr, Salona Village). You'll have a much better commute than you'd have from Vienna.

Vienna is one long strip mall down rte123.

NP, I think reference is to Church Street - runs next to rte 123. Not a strip mall, has an old small town feel.

We live in Del Ray and prioritize the same things. I walk basically all errands, and also to lots of greenways and open spaces these days.

I'm a previous Westover poster and also love Del ray. We considered it a lot and it's really such a great neighborhood. My concern there were the rumors that many family leave once kids are in school or go private. But I've heard that might be shifting so could be good to look at.

Vienna feels far to me. I also lived near DuPont Circle and when I visit friends in Vienna it feels like the far side of the moon.

Um, yea, Vienna to Dupont takes a while. It's all relative and you can say the same thing about long distances from any 2 far away points. Vienna to Tysons, no. Vienna to Woodley Park, yes.

OP used to live in Dupont C and asked about proximity to DC. So...the distance between DC and Vienna seems relevant, no?

Because it sounds like they still have to go to the office 2-3 days a week, and they have little kids, so blocking out a week or two per month to travel to DC to be in the office doesn't sound ideal.

What is your budget? Where are you commuting, even if it's only part time (traffic is going to be a monster when things start to open back up, and everyone is afraid to use the metro... which is largely going to be closed on the Orange Line this summer anyway for repairs)?

Hard to escape strip malls in the DC area suburbs...

Seconding Del Rey, but I'd go with Takoma or Shepherd Park in DC. What exactly is a "decent" budget? That can mean different things to different people.
