It's so funny that you would mention this because it's one of those books I read as a kid and loved and I feel like I've never known anyone else who's read it! (I'm from Rhode Island, and one of my teachers was really interested in having us read books by Rhode island authors)


I loved it so much! The mermaid, the minstrel, it's such a great story. My mom is a librarian so we read a lot of books! She even enrolled me in a book club where I received a box of 3 hard cover children's books every month. And she kept them all so my kids have them now!

I also read a lot of Newbery medal winners to my kids. We went through all of the Caldecott medal winners as well. It took us 2 years but we read them all!

I agree with the PP who said to save it. My older 2 kids are the same spacing as OP’s. We are reading it at 8 & 5.5 and both kids stop me constantly to explain words or concepts. They are loving the book and laugh hysterically, but half the humor goes over their heads still. We may circle back to it again when they are older, or I will encourage them to read it alone then.

I also read Harry Potter aloud and my 4 year old sat for it. I just left our some of the language that makes it creepy during the scary bits, but the first one is tame.

I’d rather stab myself in the ear. My daughter bored of them quickly. My son enjoyed reading them, but they are tedious. Other books listed are better when read aloud.

There's no way she'd be interested in a Magic Treehouse book....

My kids loved the Water Horse at that age.

I'd recommend something pretty short, with short chapters.

Another one that comes to mind - My Father's Dragon, there are two follow up books to that.
