Subject: so let's say kids/teachers in the fall come down with positive tests, what to do?
DC is hiring hundreds of contact tracers right now. Testing capacity will increase.
If they can manage to test asymptomatic people who have to be out in the community -- such as school kids and staff -- then schools can reopen.
But part of that is also pulling anyone from that environment who gets the virus immediately and putting the others who may have been exposed into a 14-day quarantine before they can return the school. Ideally, we'd do what other countries now do, and quarantine people away from their families (yes that's tricky with kids).
I think the above is the only scenario where schools open.
Test and contact trace. Repeat and repeat.

yes, really. it could be another two years before a vaccine is widely available. what is supposed to happen between now and then? are we just going to close schools until 2022?
Yes. We are. Schools will get better at distance learning but they will not re-open anytime soon (2 years is entirely possible) so we . all . need . to . get . used . to . it

Any idea how many kids don’t go home sick because their parents refuse to come get them? So many parents know their kid is sick but can’t or won’t take a sick day to let them stay home. It’s just go to the nurse if you don’t feel well. So many kids tell me their parents sent them and just said to call if they feel worse.
And those kids will be sent to the hospital. Part of being a parent is that you are ultimately responsible for your children. You don’t get to spread a virulent plague so you can stay at work.
Once kids are sent to school there is nothing a school can do unless the parent comes to pick them up. This rarely happens. And unless there is a district wide mandate that you call an ambulance if a kid doesn’t feel well and the parent won’t pick them up they will just stay at school all day.
The parents usually show up pretty quickly once we tell them we’re calling 911

Any idea how many kids don’t go home sick because their parents refuse to come get them? So many parents know their kid is sick but can’t or won’t take a sick day to let them stay home. It’s just go to the nurse if you don’t feel well. So many kids tell me their parents sent them and just said to call if they feel worse.

Eric's probably sitting at home on the couch watching TV and taking a nap. The number of hospitalizations for 5-17 year olds is incredibly low.

I do agree we can’t close schools two years. Kids are falling behind I don’t care what this DL cheerleading squad says on here. Yours are too you just don’t know it. Missing two years of learning is not okay. I think it will look different but won’t be totally shut. Or else wow this generation is really screwed.
