Now - no. When I saw it as a kid, I was terrified. Although I thought the scene that terrified most people (at the time) was pretty funny. Other movies that scared me were The Shining and a movie called Magic, with Anthony Hopkins.

It is that scary. I first watched it as a teenager and have watched it several times as an adult. In my 40s I made the mistake of watching it when I was home alone for the evening. I slept with the lights on for several nights afterwards.

I think it was scarier in the 70s as more people had the faith back then.

Ha Ha, op here, also a cradle Catholic, Catholic school, nuns, the whole schpiel, and I was 11 when I watched it too.

OK I'll pass. Thanks all!

I'm not that afraid of demons, so the movie is less scary. It's all about your personal fears IMO.

Thank you, Captain Obvious.

I'm sorry, I misread your post. I thought you said it depends on the FEAR of the person watching. So I take it back....

I also wonder if I would find it scary if I watched it for the first time now, but I will not, under any circumstances, watch it again. I pleaded with my horror-movie loving daughter to never watch it, but she did anyway (when she was a more appropriate age) and it was no big deal to her. I generally don't like scary movies (although campy ones are fine), and I think that goes back to the exorcist.

Side note - I ended up going to Georgetown for college and always declined to hang out at the exorcist steps or run up them when coming back from the bars (both of which were "things" at least back then).

Yeah, when I used to hang in Georgetown I wanted no part of those stairs.

If it had that kind of impact on you, I don't think you should watch it again. I watched it when I was 11, it was scary but I didn't have trouble sleeping or have any anxieties. I watched it again as a teen and it made me laugh at times. I would never let my kids watch it!

Let’s start a thread on the scariest movies!
This would be on my list along with Jaws and Burnt Offerings!

+1 on Ring

Omg the Ring is terrifying and also a great movie. Scared the shit out of me. Still does even though I'm 20 years older.

Same.

See.. I don't find the Ring that scary. A bit creepy, but not scary. I think it's the combination of the face and voice of the girl that scares me. I can't get it out of my head.

The face of the girl in the Ring isn't as scary, and she doesn't talk so no scary voice to go wit it.

So this is kind of dorky but if I start getting super scared I try to imagine the actors just as regular people, eating from craft services between takes and like, I don't know, rehearsing their lines or something. I tell my kids to use this method too and it seems to help them. Of course, The Exorcist is next-level scary and maybe nothing can make it unscary. Except maybe watching it with the sound off.

I remember hearing that people who saw it in theaters fainted and many ran out.

Yes, that happened.
