It says a lot more about you than OP that you read her query and took the huge leap from question to micromanaging. Project much? You might want to work on that since you apparently have too much time on your hands. NP btw. I thought it was an interesting question and I appreciated the responses so far from the faculty member and students.

My DS graduated from medical school last year and is currently a 1st year resident. In defense of the OP, I didn't understand how med school, board testing, and rotations all worked and the sequences. Just getting accepted into medical school was a journey in itself. The poster was simply thinking out loud, not helicoptering. Her student has probably paid her school's deposit, but isn't privy to how school will be handled IF classes are still online. That go-to response of the other posters is unnecessary.

I am also on the faculty of a med school & teach med students (with the caveat that I am not in NYC). Even in normal times we have a hard time convincing the 1st & 2nd years to come to lecture at all since almost everything is available on-line. They prefer listen to pre-recorded lectures because they can speed them up 1.5-2x to make class go faster. In fact, we have had to use a variety of carrots and sticks to force them to attend a nominal number of in-person teaching sessions. However, they will miss out on preceptorships.

3rd & 4th year are trickier - these are the years when the students do rotations on the wards. Currently, we have quite a few doing pathology electives via zoom - they can watch what is happening under the microscope and listen to the attending & residents talk about cases. That is a stop-gap measure. The hospital needs to ramp up seeing patients soon, as people are still sick with non-COVID illnesses & have been delaying care. Also, we are hemorrhaging money with so many beds empty & all of the money-making procedures halted. I expect that -unless the students refuse to go back - things will be up and running in some way shape or form (with modifications to enhance safety for the MS) in a few months for MS 3 & 4.
