Subject: OK, 4 weeks in, how is Distance Learning going for your kids?

This is just not true that your child is just playing at home is going to be adequate to prepare her for 1st grade. Lots of things are expected in K such as reading, reading comprehension, writing, math (groups, addition/subtraction, etc..).
If you are in DCPS and not getting a lot, then look up what is expected in common core. Work on reading level A books with her and asking her questions if she understands some of the things in the book. Practice with her writing her letters and short words. Work on additions/subtractions, groups of 5, etc...
We are at a charter and mainly wishing she had more Spanish since it’s an immersion charter. I think she is already up to grade level for next year. I will just check on those core requirements though to be sure... is it easy to find online?

Same. Love our specials teachers at school but DC plays an instrument and has Zoom lessons and music theory so calling that music. He must play sports outside for 90 min and ride his bike so that’s PE. For Art he’s drawing pictures and making cards. We dislike the Spanish instruction at school so that’s not happening at home. And we read together all the time for library. He’s 9. He’ll be fine.

Looking like camp will not be happening in this area. So that shouldn’t interfere with an early DCPS start date.

The distant learning isn’t bad, but not sure of the educational goals that need to be achieved. Not sure if elementary school child is meeting objectives. How many levels to do to pass? Child hadn’t done well before distant learning. Frankly, child is doing better at home even with parents teleworking. Worrying about child passing. Furthermore, worried about DCPS plans for early start for school. Have paid for camps throughout summer.

I wasn't expecting my kid to learn a ton of new stuff. But he has enough to do, and he (4th grade) is able to figure it out and do it reasonably independently so that the adults in the house can work to about 75% of capacity, give or take.
I don't need distance learning to keep my kid on grade level to consider that it's "working". Right now, I need for it to give him enough of a sense of purpose that he doesn't completely lose his mind.

I’m getting up before dawn and working late into the evening so I can manage kids and still get paid.
Can the older one play with the younger one, so it's not all on you?
