Some of the nicest Catholic families we know chose SR because they care about academics foremost. Plus, on the sidelines, the SR parents seem very nice, friendly, not screamers or overly obnoxious unlike some other schools. I would say that it is very proudly Catholic and we dont know any non-Catholic families who have ever chosen it for their DDs. It seems to compete with Visi for students more than any other Catholic girls school, at least among the families we know. There are always people who compare SR and Visi's academics as the two best for Catholic girls. My impresssion of the academics at both is that Visi is more hide-bound and traditionally Catholic with tons of busy work whereas SR has a more modern, intellectual approach to academics.
Not sure what "hide-bound" means with regard to Visi but I think there is lots of overlap in the types of families with girls at Visi and SR. One of the bigger differences between the two schools is geography. Visi draws about 40% of its students from Virginia, while SR draws maybe 5-10% from Virginia. So SR is more of DC/MD option due to its location.
Visi may have a wider range of students than SR but the college placements are very strong at Visi for the top half of the class. Class of 2019 included the following destinations:
Georgetown - 10
Cornell - 4
Princeton -2
Penn - 1
Dartmouth - 1
Vanderbilt - 2
Notre Dame - 2
UVA - 2
Michigan - 3
Wake Forest - 4
UCLA -1
USC -1
William & Mary - 2
UNC Chapel Hill - 1
Tufts - 2
Northwestern - 1
Bowdoin -1
Amhest - 1
Middlebury -1
Williams -1
