I know a few people with 5. One of them basically had two sets of kids and had a nanny and a SAHM at the same time and either the nanny or mom would be with one group and then they'd switch.

This is just a lame virtue signal from people with 0-2 kids that makes them feel so righteous about the environment without actually having to do anything other than sit on their couch and post online and judge others. “Oh I’m so awesome I’ve done my part by having 0-2 kids, it is everyone else’s fault for having more than 2 kids...”

There are a lot of large dysfunctional families. More so than not.

More than 4 is not that uncommon here in Chevy Chase, lots of Catholic families. Not sure how they do it financially especially since most of them send their kids to Catholic school, live in a big house and pay dues to Columbia.

My protestant DH comes from a family with 5 kids. They all get along and have great reunions. I would advise you to do it if you can.
Don't worry about the "overpopulation" posters, Our birth rate in the US is decreasing and we need more people to care for elderly and keep up production later!

I kind of romanticize big families but realistically don't think I could swing 5 without being stressed and short-tempered a lot of the time. But different people have different abilities. If you guys love having 4 I really don't know what the difference would be adding another - you're already used to competing priorities, giving lots of different kids attention, having kids at different developmental stages, etc. You're going to need a freaking huge car though.

OP how old are your kids now? I would consider asking them what they think. I have a cousin w 5 kids and the older 2 resented basically being parents so much that they don’t want their own kids.

I’m from a family of 5. I was raised Catholic but not breeder-catholic (my parents used BC and got surprised by twins when they went for #4.)
My family is the best. It worked well because my parents (my Mom especially) we’re clearly cut out for it and lived having a big family. We all got lots of attention but also a lot of freedom. We were well off financially, especially by the time the younger 2 came along, and kids were well spaced (2 clusters), which helped.
All that said, I do agree with others that it’s a bit irresponsible and selfish from a sharing-the-earth perspective.
