Oh, you absolutely could do that. Just be careful of your flight times out of Tokyo -- if you have three days in Tokyo, don't take a redeye, or you will lose all the gains you have getting over jetlag. You may also want to think about Tokyo on the back end -- the first day or two will be weird, you'll wake up stupid early in the morning. (Pro-tip -- have food on hand as you may wake up before anywhere is open. I'm an early riser and always need a snack before the rest of the family wakes up. We keep ramen nearby for the first couple of mornings where we need a 4AM snack.)

They don't mean now but I'm planning to the future. They cold be planning a couple years out.

Cairns has a lot nearby - Reef, Daintree, Kuranda, Aboriginal village museum. No beach though, due to sharks and mud flats. They have an amazing public pool, though.

Of course it’s doable and some people do it. I prefer to go slow on my vacations, spending more time in one place, getting a feel for it. So, I would rather do 2 weeks in either japan or Australia and mix up the experiences there. But if you like to get a flavor of both cultures in one trip, why not? I am sure it will be a fabulous experience!

Be sure to add in travel time. I should mention that we used points for international first class on the outbound. Best sleep ever on a plane (individual pods). Coming home was economy class.

What is there to do in Port Douglas?

Not PP, but its a popular jumping off point for Great Barrier Reef tours. With its location much closer to the equator, it has a tropical feel and is popular in the southern winter, when it is much warmer than Sydney/Melbourne/Adelaide. Also has a rain forest nearby.
